In almost every culture, the vehicle mechanic occupation has mostly been dominated by men. However, a small group of women in Lagos, Nigeria, led by Sandra Aguebor, have been challenging this stereotype since 2004. Sandra is Nigeria's first female mechanic, and has used her success and platform (The Lady Mechanic Initiative) to teach and empower underprivileged and sexually abused girls and women to become mechanics as a means of survival. After learning about her, I wanted to commemorate her and her students' blood, sweat and tears on canvas as part of my Vocation Series. The world needs more empowered women in male-dominated roles.
